Nails of the Week: Happy 75th Anniversary Wizard of Oz !

Follow the yellow brick road, follow the yellow brick road...

I heard that this year (and more specifically-this month) marks the 75th anniversary of this amazing, oldie but goodie film and I just had to do a manicure or makeup look inspired by one of the most influential movies of all time!

You can't help but love this classic movie, I know it's been a favourite from my childhood that's continued throughout my adulthood - so what better homage to this cult classic, than some cute and fun nail art?

Right away, I knew I had to use my Deborah Lipmann nail polish in "Ruby Red Slippers" for this manicure and was torn between doing a yellow brick road or emerald city nail art for my transition nail, but decided on the yellow brick road option. I grabbed my Julep 'Bea' nail polish, and my trusty Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen in 'Black', and brought my nail art vision to life.

Here's how I did it:

First I made sure my nail beds and hands were scrubbed, and washed clean after grooming and filing my nails. Once they were clean and free of debris, I applied some Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) around my nail beds to make sure I don't make a mess of myself and makes clean up faster, later.

I started to apply my transitional nail polish first, so I applied 3 coats of my 'Bea' nail polish, making sure that each coat dried completely before applying the next coat. I did this so that while I apply the polish to my other nails, to my transitional nail polish will completely dry and harden before I start using the nail art pen.

Once I was finishing layering on the yellow transitional colour, I began to apply a coat of  'Ruby Red Slippers' to the rest of my nails.

And then a second coat...

And a third.

I was actually pleasantly surprised to find that I only needed 3 coats of my glitter nail polish, I thought I would need more. Wonderfully, 3 coats gave me a dark, black base and the layers of the red glitter gave it beautiful dimension.

Once all my nails were dry, I began using my Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen to draw on the brick lines on my yellow transitional nail. Making sure not to press too hard and get a huge black blob of polish to ruin all my hard work - hey, it's happened! A light hand is definitely key! After all is said and dry, I applied a layer of clear top coat, just to make the glitter really shine and seal it all in place.

And voila!

I'm so in love with this manicure and this colour!! These pictures really don't do it justice, it really does look like Ruby red slippers! The yellow brick transitional nail really makes the theme of this nail art clear and I think it's a great way to celebrate and say thank for entertaining us for 75 years!!

What do you think? Do you love and think its as adorable as I do? I can't stop looking down and my hands and nails! I love it, and feel so festive! What about you, will you try this manicure and help me celebrate this legendary film? My Emmy's Best: Hair, Makeup & Dressed

Happy Monday lovekatz!

I know, not much to be happy about on a Monday, right? Wrong! It's the Monday after the Emmy's! That means we are all just getting down from our Hollywood high, and will only have it completely out of our systems in 24-72 hours.

I just wanted to share with you all my favourite looks of the Emmy's last night in Fashion, Hair and Makeup. It was so hard to sift through them all and choose 3 in each category that I loved- everyone looked stunning! There were some definite misses, but nothing horrifyingly wrong (thank goodness!), making the process of elimination super hard.

Here are my Emmy favourites in Hair, Makeup and best Dressed; and I will also tell you who was my favourite overall look at the end!

Best Hair:

Clair Danes - I also loved her makeup, thought it was so classic and pretty, and really played off her natural features. Her hair was the star of her entire look for me. I love that she went short! Don't get me wrong, she is such a stunner with longer hair - but I love me a short haired Danes! Makes her look so youthful and fresh. Her dress wasn't a complete miss, it just washed her out. Too bad too, she had everything else going for her!

Carrie Preston - I was so impressed with everything Carrie delivered us yesterday - her hair, makeup and that dress!!! - everything was beautiful and spot on! She is exuding classic Hollywood glamour here and I am loving everything about it! I love her bold red hair, parted on the side with a vintage curl; but what I loved the most was that she wasn't afraid to wear a pastel pink dress with it. Way to go girl, she was one of my absolute favourites of the night!

Zooey Deschanel - I just have to say that she's an absolute doll! I love her, and I think the reason she always looks so lovely on the outside is because she's lovely on the inside as well. Although I wasn't the biggest fan of her dress, I do like that she stays true to her style and that's why she still looked great! The real star of her look (besides her pretty peepers), is her hair. How effortless and dreamy!! Simple but beautiful, and again I am getting an old Hollywood glamour feeling from this style. So pretty!

Best Makeup:

Lena Dunham - First, I liked her dress. I liked that she looked young and whimsical and it was a full gown. Secondly, I loved her make up. It was flawless, bold but still really pretty - perfect for girls her age to wear. However I don't like the matchy-match of her dress and makep together. Her makeup is beautiful - flushed skin, bold coloured smokey eye and a pretty pout. It sophisticated her without aging her. Beautiful job by her Makeup Artist, just maybe the wrong colour choice for that dress, in my opinion.

Rose Byrne - How GORGEOUS did she look last night? Absolute stunner! I've been looking to her for fashion inspiration for awhile now, and last night just make me fall in LOVE with her style! Her makeup is my favourite though, a fall neutral eye with blush and a lip colour that are true to her name and compliment her dress and hair beautifully. The makeup is so natural and really just plays off her already stunning features, and her warm tones hair just give her an overall glow. So romantic!

January Jones - This is pastels done right for fall, in specific, pink done right for fall. Pink has been and is going to be one of her biggest colours this fall, especially more of the blush and petal pinks like we saw last night at The Emmy's. She managed to pull off this pastel, head to toe, and made is so perfect for Autumn! I love that her make up is so subtle on her lips and eyes, but the highlight is so intense and gorgeous and it makes her whole face luminous. So girly and romantic, perfect with her hair (again, old Hollywood glamour-esque) and really pulled her whole look together.

Best Dressed:

Kayley Cuoco - I'm a little bit in a love-hate with this one. I Love love love this dress, but I feel like the look, in its entirety, is missing something. I haven't been able to quite put my thumb in it, I go back and forth from her hair to her accessories (or lack thereof!) or overdone eye makeup and haven't been able to place it. But I love this burgundy dress, I am biased though - I live for burgundy in the Fall! Besides the colour, I love all he textures and details on the skirt and the bodice makes the whole dress so modern! I'd wear this dress! It definitely caught my eye on the Red Carpet last night and it kept catching it throughout the festivities.

Rose Byrne - There's no way that she doesn't deserve to be listed under this category as well as Best Makeup, I absolutely adored her outfit as well! She always looks so sleek and chic on the Red Carpet and this was no exception. I love that she chose to participate in the huge pink trend and how the cut-outs bring this dress from innocent to sexy! Great choice for her to wear at this event, it's very Emmy-esque - but nonetheless gorgeous on her!

Kiernan Shipka - I absolutely LOVE this dress, and love it even more on her with those Jimmy Choo heels! This dress caught my eye and my interest instantly, and I was hungry to know more about it! I am so happy that she chose to wear a dress like this, it's so youthful and whimsical. There's a certain innocence about this dress and I love the vintage inspired silhouette. Paired with those strappy, metallic heels, it makes the entire outfit look very dainty and feminine. This is something that girls this age should be wearing, I'm so in love with the whole look!

Although it was super hard to choose from all the beautiful looks and dresses last night, I have come to
a decision as to who was my very favourite overall look of the night and I chose - Rose Byrne!! I'm sure it was pretty obvious, but this was my very favourite overall look of the Emmys last night. I love her hair, her makeup, her dress, just EVERYTHING!

What did you think of the Emmy's last night dolls? What were your favoutie or not so favourite looks of the night? Are some of my best of the Emmy's your favourites? I would love to know who were your favouties, so let me know in the comments box below! i Heart Ipsy - My September Glam Bag

I have come across yet another (fabulous!) monthly beauty subscription, Ipsy, whichs send you all different beauty brands as opposed to products all from the same brand. This way you get to try different products and brands and even put a full look together!

I was browsing some beauty accounts on Instagram and came across one and she had posted about last months Ipsy Glam Bag - and I was immediately interested. She had gotten a handful of great products for $10! Wouldn't you be tempted? So I went to the website to see what it was all about and it didn't take me long to want to subscribe. Ipsy works with a lot of great and well known brands and almost all of the items are full sized! Um, hello? Why haven't I signed up sooner? Much like Julep and other subscription programs, you take a little quiz to find your style and they gather custom products for your glam bag according to your style.

The great thing about the Ispy website is that its also a beauty community. You can post reviews of the items in your Glam Bag, post photos and tutorials of makeup looks using items from your Glam Bag - and you earn points for additional items for your next Glam Bag every time you do! So much fun!

So here's what I got in my very first Ipsy Glam Bag:

J.cat Beauty Fantabulous Lipstick in 'Honeycrisp' - This is a warm, creamy, flesh-toned/peachy nude with a soft, balmy finish. I personally, have never heard of this brand before, but I always love a good nude! I like this colour for fall, but I do have many like this already in my collection so I can see it being pushed aside. I will give it a good try to see if I like the product and colour, so depending on that we will see if it becomes a staple nude.

NYX 'Rock' Eyeshadow - This is a dark, gunmetal grey with grey and silver sparkle shimmer, and has a satin-y finish. I love NYX eyeshadows, they are always finely milled and pigmented. Having only a few items in my collection from NYX, I was excited for more NYX product with Ipsy, because I do like what I have from them. I just wish it was a different colour. There's a lot of other dupe-able products out there, and in my collection already, but I can see myself reaching for this colour for a nice smokey eye - I love the sparkle shimmer! A bolder colour or more neutral brown would get more use, but its still a lovely colour for my kit!

Cailyn Cosmetics 'Big Apple' Tinted Lip Balm - This is a true red colour with warm undertones and has coverage like a lipstick, but creamy like lip balm. Really pretty red, great for any classic look without drying out your lips. I love the little brush that it comes with, hidden in the cap of the product. Super cute and convenient! You get as much product in the little pot as you do an average lipstick, that was much appreciated! The colour range that they have in their collection is really beautiful, so want to try some other colours!

'It's So B!G' Volumizing Mascara By Elizabeth Mott - This is a black, volumizing mascara, with a unique hourglass shaped, large wand applicator. The hourglass shaped wand applicator is what has me most excited about this product, but is also what I fear won't work about the product. This is the 4ml size, not sure if there is a larger size that this. I might be doing a review of the mascara in the near future, let me know if you would like me to in the comments box below and stay tuned for that. I do have high expectations for this mascara as its advertised to be 'easy to remove'. We will see!

Jesse's Girl Black Liquid Eyeliner Pen - This is a felt tiped, marker type of liquid eyeliner, not your average pot and brush liquid or gel liner. I particularly love these type of eyeliners and prefer them over pencil, gel or other liquid liners. I have been a long time lover and user of MAC's Penultimate Eyeliner in 'Rapidblack', mostly because other brands pen-type of eyeliners have been disappointing in comparison. I have heard of this brand before with their Glow Stix Lipglosses, (and I know those are rad) so I am most excited to try this. Review for this item will be on the blog - without a doubt, so check back for that if you are also an eyeliner pen fan! So happy that I got the Glam Bag with this eyeliner!

And of course, all of these goodies came in this super cute, blue and black makeup bag. Great for storing my Ipsy products and more. Love the cute floral lace print!

There you have it my darlings, all the goodies from Ipsy this month and everything needed to put together a classic, glamorous look! Do you receive an Ipsy Glam Bag as well? Do you love (or not so love) the items you received? I would love to hear what you thought of this months Glam Bag in the comments box below! Haul! - Estée Lauder/MAC/Clinique Warehouse Sale Sept 2013

Hi loves,

If you're lucky enough, like I am, to live in Toronto and the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), then you might already be aware of this great warehouse sale that Estée Lauder (and all the brands under its umbrella) throw every 3 months.  This is not a sale for everyone, limited tickets are issued to people and companies. Lucky to have friends who gave me tickets, I took my cousin Christine and headed into the madness.

Now, when I say madness - I mean MADNESS! The people who attend the three day event are Cosmo-holics, and to get the best deal for the best product - the competition is cutthroat. I have stopped attending the sale on Fridays because it is just insane in there, I prefer to go on Saturdays or Sundays to avoid long lineups for products and checkout. The warehouse is made up of four buildings, different buildings/rooms for different makeup products, skincare and fragrances. So much product! So many brands too - MAC, Estée Lauder, Clinuque, Smashbox, Origins, GoodSkin Labs, Ojon, Bumble & Bumble, Coach and so much more!

Needless to say, I found all I wanted and some that I didn't even know I wanted! This is usually how it happens. No avoiding or denying it, that's why I tell first timers to not go crazy because its easy to blow your budget. Like, EXPLODE your budget.

Here's the recap of the products I purchased at this months sale:

Ojon Rare Harvest SWA+ Fortifying Hair Juice - I got this to split a 2 for 1 deal with Christine. I was looking at some hair thickening shampoos and leave in treatments and have heard some good things about this brand, so why not? The description on the bottle states that this product "Protects Fragile hair against future breakage" and it's a "Lightweight mist that surrounds fragile, thinning hair with a protective shield that helps keep it smooth and maintains hairs ability to resist breakage. Formulated with rare Swa Oil, rich in amino acids to strengthen hair against breakage.". I love the scent and I'm hoping it does all the wonderful things it says it does! Fingers crossed!

Clinique Turn Around Concentrate - There's a part of the sale after checkout, where they have a donation station set up to raise funds for Women's Breast Cancer. For those who make a donation you get a gift, and the gift this time was this Clinique serum. I always make a donation, regardless of the gift I get, and I love Clinique skincare so I'm happy to give when I can :). This product is described on the box as "Allergy Tested. 100% Fragrance free. Unveils skins optimal radiance: brighter, even toned, luminous. Achieved through an unprecedented multi-level skin renewal process. An advanced cocktail of exfoliants continually resurfaces skin for a brighter, more even appearance. Immediately skin looks perfected. Over time, the appearance of fine lines is reduced. Oil-free." Very intriguing. Excited to see if this will help the condition of my skin and make an overall improvement to my complexion, here's hoping!

GoodSkin Labs Eyliplex-2 Lash Boosting Serum - I also got this as a 2 for 1 split deal with Christine, and I  have to say I am most excited to try this product! I have tried another lash serum before, but it was made of natural ingredients and I didn't get the results I expected. Hoping that because this is not a "natural" product that I will have better results and no weird side effects. Here's is what is claimed on the packaging about this product: "After 8 weeks: Visibly longer, thicker lashes" and "After 12 weeks: 68% of Women reported their lashes looked longer". That's what I'm hoping for! The serum is applied with a thin brush, the applicator and application are very similar to when using liquid liner. My lashes are long, however they are very light in colour at the very tips - making them look shorter than they really are. I'm hoping this product will help thicken my lashes and correct that issue for me so I can wear my lashes more natural.

MAC Creme D'Nude Cremesheen Liptick - this is a permanent colour and I already have this for my kit - but not in my personal collection. How could I possibly resist this classic nude in limited edition packaging? Loving this cute little white bullet! Creme D'Nude is a creamy, pinky-peach, true nude colour, with a very subtle shimmer and creamy texture. This is one of my favourite nudes, because its warm enough to not make lips look dead, or chalky. Welcome little cutie to you're new home in my collection!

MAC 184 Duo Fibre Fan Brush & MAC 205 Mascara Fan Brush - these were some of those "unexpected" purchases that happen when I'm at a sale like this, but I'm glad I got them. It wasn't until I saw these brushes, when I realized that I have no fan brushes in my kit anymore and I needed these - stat! The discount on brushes was more than reasonable, so I got both the larger Duo Fibre fan brush and the smaller, stiffer bristled fan brush. I love Duo Fibre brushes in general, so the larger fan brush was a real score. The small fan brush is described to be used to apply mascara, however I'm thinking to use it for contouring. I love using fan brushes for contouring and this little fan brush is ideal for nose contouring. The bristles are a little stiffer, so I'll have to see if it will work they way I want it too. But honestly, how cute is the small fan brush? I think it's adorable!!

Well, that's quite a haul, I'm happy that I got a broad spectrum of items - from hair treatments to lipstick, tools and skincare in between. I'm happy with what I got and I hope you like it too! Have you ever attended this sale or one like this? Let me know in the comments box below and what you get when you go! I would love to see your hauls so tag me on Instagram #makeupmasochist so I can see! Next sale is in December, and I usually do a lot of Christmas shopping on that one, but I still manage to bring something home for myself! Stay tuned for that sale!

I'm going to be writing review posts in the items I have mentioned, so if your interested to read on how they worked out, you can subscribe to my blog by inputting your email in the box at the top of the page! You can also follow my blog on Bloglovin' by clicking on the icon or search my blog and follow! What would you like me to review first? Let me know by dropping me a line at makeupmasochist@gmail.com or leave me suggestions in the comments box below! Gotta get to work reviewing these babies, catch you dolls later!
